Local artists learn about the business of song
Local artists - from a teenager who just completed their first song to an accomplished singer-song writer with two major international hits – gathered with industry professionals at The Business of Song Workshop in Kitchener this May.
Canadian country music-songwriter Jamie Warren coordinated and hosted the workshop in partnership with City of Kitchener and Waterloo Region Small Business Centre to connect song writers with industry experts.
The city is committed to supporting creative industries through initiatives like these that help local artists learn about the business-side of their craft. Partnerships with local legends like Jamie Warren and Dan Hill are essential in getting access and opportunities, as well as tips on how to become a successful artist.
The panel of experts included J. Richard Hutt, Record Producer, Cedartree Recording Studio, Craig Norris, CBC, Morning Host and Music Director, Jennifer Beavis, Publisher, BMG Rights Canada Inc. and Andreas Rizek, Song Rites Rep, SOCAN.
Discussions and questions included topics like publishing, royalties, and digital revenues from music. Andreas Rizek stressed the importance of knowing where the music industry is going and taking advantage of platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music to get your songs noticed. Jennifer Beavis shared a simple tip on how to make money from your songs on YouTube by monetizing your music with the switch of a button that allows ads to run. To close the evening, Juno and Grammy winner Dan Hill shared his song-writing techniques and performed live.
