Conestoga students rise to the entrepreneurial challenge
“There are so many entrepreneurs in this city – pioneers and trailblazers in the food community,” says Jennifer Fletcher, manager at Conestoga College’s department of Applied Research and Entrepreneurship. “We’re trying to foster that skill set, and inspire the next generation to push that entrepreneurial spirit even further.”

The Rising Stars Canapé Series is the perfect setting for this culinary torch passing. Hosted in partnership between Conestoga’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, the School of Business and Hospitality and the Kitchener Market, Conestoga students have an opportunity to craft incredible cocktail parties from menu development, to ingredient sourcing to service. The series comes in three installations, two of which are locally inspired, and one that draws inspiration from international street food.
And while the theme, in part, spans the globe, Fletcher expects the impact will be found in Kitchener’s core.
“This is a catalyst for the food industry,” she says. “Our students come from all over, but events like this create a relationship with the city, its restaurants and farmers; it inspires retention in the region.”
The multidisciplinary events ties in a range of talents fostered at Conestoga College, integrating those interested in everything from hospitality management to those looking for a career in the kitchen. But regardless of stream, quality can be expected. Industry leaders like Terry Salmond of TWH Social and Mike Magda of the Fork and Cork have roots in Conestoga’s culinary program.
While a dinner menu was on the docket last year, attendees can expect canapés, cocktails and live music all held at the Kitchener Market, ideal for its central location, kitchen and relationship with the community.
“The revitalization of downtown has brought such strength to the restaurant industry,” says Fletcher. “Our students have a real opportunity to champion their own brand here, but this benefits everybody, not just the students, not just the city, but the entire community.”
The Rising Stars Canapé Series will take place on February 22, March 29 and April 19. Tickets can be purchased online.
