Express your commitment to the environment through mosaic art
Hanging laundry to dry, leaving the car at home once a week, eating more local food, or making a rain garden are examples of simple actions residents can take to be more climate friendly. This year’s artist in residence is inspiring citizens to document their commitment to the environment by making a personal mosaic.
“Just like the pieces in one of my mosaics come together to create something that’s greater than the sum of its parts, all the little actions that we take as individuals, as neighbourhoods, and as a city will add up to make a positive difference in the fight against climate change,” says Julie Sperling, 2017 Artist in Residence. “Art is one way to engage the community in a dialogue about climate change, to inspire people to take action, and to spark creative thinking that can lead to innovative solutions.”
Using her mosaics as conversation starters, Julie hopes people in Kitchener will be inspired to talk about climate change in a way that is different. And, while they are talking, they’ll have a chance to make a personal mosaic symbolizing a positive action they can take to benefit the environment. “Anyone can come out and create a mosaic,” states Sperling. “Using materials like stone, glass, and tile participants will create their design in a mortar base, quite literally cementing their commitment to climate action.”
