Kitchener opens first-of-its-kind social entrepreneurship hub in Downtown Kitchener: the SDG Idea Factory

The University of Waterloo and Velocity officially expanded their presence in downtown Kitchener today with a groundbreaking event at the new Innovation Arena building on the University of Waterloo's Health Sciences campus. The new site is part of an expanding focus on health innovation in Southwestern Ontario.

Suburban businesses across Kitchener will be able to apply to be part of the City's Love My Business program. This past April, Council approved the Love My Business program, which supports local businesses in suburban areas of Kitchener that were impacted by the pandemic. 

The Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) has awarded the City of Kitchener with a planning and strategic development excellence award for the Make It Kitchener 2.0 (MIK 2.0) economic development strategy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on local businesses. While some businesses have thrived, many others have been hard hit, including those dependent on in-person interactions, like restaurants, movie theatres, personal services, hospitality, performance venues and artists. Both business owners and their staff have been deeply affected.
